This popular spot, right outside of Aspen, CO, is a favorite for both fishermen, hikers, and landscape photographers. It is best known for it's magnificent displays of autumn foliage and a crystal clear reflection of dawn's first light striking the two Maroon Bells peaks ever morning.

Dream Lake - IMG#1503
I caught this reflection on the banks of Dream Lake on a crystal clear summer morning in Rocky Mountain National Park. The alpenglow cast on Hallet Peak by dawns first light was truly "dreamy."

Hanging on to Autumn - IMG#9464
On a recent trip to northern Arizona this past October, I made sure to visit the north rim of the Grand Canyon. I was anticipating the incoming weather to make for some good shots out across the canyon, but I never expected it to snow so hard and be so cold this early in October. While I was a bit disappointed that the storm snowed out one whole day of my trip, I was pleased to be able to turn my camera towards my first winter scene of the season. It was snowing so hard that I was forced to shoot this from under an umbrella and still got droplets all over my lens. I slowed down the shutter as much as possible in effort to really make the snowfall show up in my picture.

McWay Fall - IMG#8332
This is the scene just down a short trail from the Pacific Coast Highway in Julia Pfeiffer Burns State Park. This spot really moves me, it makes me feel like I am at a deserted lagoon in some hidden tropical paradise. I want nothing more than to get to the bottom of the waterfall however I don't think you are allowed to and even if you could, I think you would have to climb or boat down to the beach.

Cypress Silhouette - IMG#8452
This cypress tree growing nicely upon the top of one of California's many cliffs along the coast. The shapes, twists, and bends made for an excellent silhouette and the sunburst is icing on the cake.

The rocks and cliffs that litter the coastline as you drive down the Pacific Coast Highway in Big Sur make this one of the prettiest stretches of beach in the country.

The fog in this picture turned out to be a blessing, as it hides some rather unsightly structures from view.

Shower of light - IMG#6636
This shot was taken at Pfeiffer Beach in Big Sur, CA. I took this picture right after a wave had crashed into the walls of this sea cave. I took a ton of shots trying to catch the resulting spray of water at the perfect moment.

Hidden Beaches - IMG#1487
Right before Christmas I got the chance to visit some of the most beautiful beaches in the world! They can be found north of Santa Cruz along the Pacific Coast Highway. As you drive north towards San Francisco, you will pass numerous pull offs. Just pick one and explore! Most of them lead to very secluded picturesque beaches. Just be warned... some of them may be "clothing optional..." FYI - don't point your camera towards the naked people... they don't like that... :P

Dinosaur Caves Rainbow - IMG#1599
California's central coat has many photographic possibilities. But while out shooting around Shell Beach one morning, the last thing I had expected was a big bright rainbow.

Ebb and Flow - Panther Beach, CA
After living in California for over three years and drooling over the many picture perfect vistas along our coast, I finally got a chance to spend a few days doing nothing but shooting along the central coastline. My first stop was the popular stretch of coastline north of Santa Cruz. This scene is found at Panther Beach, I think..., a couple of hours before sunset. Having never been here before I really had no idea what to expect or how the conditions would be, so I spent an hour or so walking the beach and familiarizing myself with the beaches until I settled on this comp, where I used a newly acquired big stopper to take this image. From Coastal Landscapes

Into the Light - IMG#9904
As the first snow storm of winter was clearing out around the north rim of the Grand Canyon, I went out looking for some interesting light in the surrounding forests. As the clouds broke on the fog lifted, rays of light would pierce the canopy of trees providing some amazing scenes. When I noticed a few deer making their way through the area I quietly waited for the perfect opportunity to snap off a few frames. This deer graciously walked right into the center of the rays of light. My only complaint is the tree coming out of it's back. "Never put a telephone pole coming out of the top of someones head," keeps running through my head. How much do you think it takes away from the scene?

White Pocket - AZ IMG#5302
I have to say that White pocket is by far the most bizarre place that I have been fortunate enough to visit. This ancient petrified dune field is literally in the middle of nowhere, over a three hour trek from the nearest paved road. The area is known for the white layer of "brain rocks" that lay over the normally found sandstone in the region.

This total annular eclipse was a rare treat for us living in the western United States. Since I have never seen a total eclipse and I was so close to the "totality belt," I opted to head north to Lake Tahoe for the event. For these close up images, I used a sheet of mylar wrapped around my "bigma." The result was a more detailed and well defined exposure of the eclipse. In some of my closer frames you can actually see the sun spots on the surface of our great star! Only problem with this method was that along with blocking out 99% of the suns UV and visible light, the mylar took pretty much all color with it. The fix was to warm up the RAW version quite a bit in ACR. Then I stacked these five exposure onto one frame in the sequence and orientation that the moon passed by the sun.

Down by the River - IMG#3576
I captured this scene while exploring the "hot creek" area of Owen's Valley on a frigid winter morning a few years back. It was one of those days when I had to choose between shooting or snowboarding- always a tough call! I used a 10 stop ND and a grad filter to help even out the light.

Valley Light - IMG#6783
I found this spot while scouting the Tehachapi mountains for new shooting locations. The landscape here consist more of rolling hills rather than the dramatic peaks found throughout the rest of the Sierras and is known for a vivid wildflower display in the springs, which I will definitely be returning for next year!

After Midnight - IMG#3779
I have been seeing this image in my head for at least four months or so and finally this past weekend, with the help of my beautiful wife, I was able to pull it all together. This was taken on Sunday, the day after the full moon, unfortunately I blew the shot on the night prior. I had watched the weather, I had my heading on the moon rise, I scouted, and we even bought brand new 2-way radios to communicate by. This was it. I was bound and determined to get my shot. Unfortunately I learned very quickly that if you are not far enough away from your subject this just doesn't work. And to my horror, when the moon did rise, my wife was twice as tall as said moon. I ended up spending then next hour or so scouting a spot to try again the next night. In the end I captured this at almost a half of a mile from my wife with my 6D and Sigma 50-500mm lens.
