Alabam Hills is a popular destination for all outdoor enthusiast alike. But it is probably best known for being the location of filming in many Hollywood movies. Photographers know it for it't many arches and often dramatic light as seen on this morning. Sunrise light to the east skirted underneath a low blanket of clouds and provided the kind of light show I dream about.

Death Valley Towers - IMG#7709
In the badlands of Death Valley National Park one will find all kinds of interesting scenes. Not to mention all the patterns, colors, and textures you can photograph. This photograph actually came to be because of the dead end you see before you. I had wanted to find my way to the top of that ridge but could not get much farther than this, where I set up my tripod and clicked this image.

The Slot - IMG#0422
Found in Anza Borrego State Park in California, "the slot" is the closest thing to a true slot canyon I have been able to explore in the state. This canyon's lack of smooth polished walls make photographer here a little more challenging. I was able to use a play on the fading direct sun light to male this composition.

It was Written - IMG#6314
On a trip over to the Eastern Sierras for our annual holiday ski trip and I made sure to leave a couple of days open for shooting. I had searched for this spot on two different occasions prior to this trip and on the previous trip I had literally walked around in the middle of the desert for about 8 hours looking and never found it, I don't think I have ever walked so far and gone nowhere. It would turn out that I was way off my mark and probably would have had to walk at least another 8 hours to stumble across this infamous rock. All that being said, I guess my wife is good luck and I should take her more often. Because on this trip we dedicated a whole day just to looking for the spot and the next morning to shooting it assuming we found it the day before. And somehow my wife seemed to pretty much walk right to it in less than an hour.

Grand Prismatic Spring - IMG#0120
By far my favorite geothermal feature in Yellowstone National Park, Grand Prismatic is unreal. It's vividly colored rings and fingers of algae and micro-organisms not to mention it's shear size make it truly a sight to see. In fact, I had to climb to the top of a ridge about half a mile away to be able to capture this detail of the outer "fingers" of the spring. *numbered to 25

The Merced and Half Dome - IMG#5631
I normally will not even set up my tripod unless conditions are "right" or it is at least around sunset or sunrise and I am just hoping for some action. But when I came across this scene, while doing some scouting for where I wanted to shoot on a return trip to the park, the fog was just start to lift off of the valley floor and I knew that I should be able to achieve this nicely and evenly "whited" out sky. So i set up my manfrotto legs and waited for the sun to start passing behind the cliff on the right. Although I had set everything up, in hind site I could have shot handheld considering my exposure was fast enough to stop these bubble on the float down the Merced River.
Half Dome from Tenaya Canyon - IMG#3348
This one is from a summer trip to Yosemite in which I spent my time mostly shooting the Milky Way. The clear skies were nice for the stars later this night but made finding a composition for this scene a little challenging.

Fun on the Four Lane - IMG#1270
As one leaves Fresno, heading up 168 toward the mountains, you will almost have to drive up a portion of road know to us as the "four lane." On countless trip I have thought I should save some time either coming or going to shoot from here.... I never have. The idea of spend g my prime hours of light on the side of a highway instead of alone in a forest, on a scenic peak, or at the water's edge of a peaceful sierra lake make me quiver. None the less, on this trip home from snowboarding the light and the four lane just happened to come together and since my gear is always in my truck if I am, I managed to capture this...

Madera County Sunset - IMG#5591
As of lately I have made it my mission to find some original places to get some nice shots. I stumbled on to the place after an afternoon driving around the country side kind of aimlessly. And after knocking on a few doors, I finally figured out who's property this was and got permission to shoot up here. So one day while working, when I noticed these "ribbon" clouds forming over the foothills as significant storm was brewing in the Sierras, I made a bee line up here to catch the sunset. This area has real potential and I can't wait to get back here for the spring bloom!

The Rock - IMG#5306
Morro Rock is a 581-foot volcanic plug located just offshore from Morro Bay in California. I have been wanting to get a "decent" shot from here for a while now. Finally after 3 failed attempts, I got closer to what I was looking for but still not quite what I had envisioned.

Bright Angel Sunrise - IMG#9760
While traveling through Arizona, I made it a point to go to the north rim of the Grand Canyon. I have been to the Grand Canyon many times but never made it to the northern side so I wasn't about to miss this chance. I had heard that were a lot less people here but that was an under statement. Compared to the more convenient southern rim this place was a ghost town. I was pleasantly surprised to have the place to myself almost every time I went out to shoot. This picture was taken near Bright Angel Point shortly after the sunrise. I thought my morning was going to be a bust because of the thick low clouds but, like in most cases, patience paid off. About thirty minutes to an hour after sunrise the clouds gave way enough to let this beautiful light wash the walls of the main canyon opposite of me. I stitched three shots together using photoshop to get this final image.

Goosenecked - IMG#7972
I woke up for sunrise one morning in Moab, Utah and headed straight to this spot overlooking a goose neck section of the Colorado River at Dead Horse State Park The cloudless morning and harsh light made this shot a little less appealing and dramatic than I was hoping for so I turned my attention to a zoomed in view from the infamous overlook.

Southern Utah is home to some of the country's most remote wildernesses and bizarre landscapes. A popular jumping off point for exploring this area is Moab, Utah and Ihapeened to find this wondrous area not too far from there. I used a Lee Big Stopper to capture a long exposure on an otherwise bright day.

The Mighty Sierras - Madera County, CA
This scene comes to you from a fairly well known 4x4 trail in the Sierras, but what is "well known" to the locals is almost never photographed. I knew that there would be some cloud cover and hopefully a little "action" on this June evening, but what I didn't expect was the below freezing temps and a light dusting of snow to accumulate while I was there. Within minutes of snapping this shot, the ridge I was on looked like the one on left hand side of the image. I used a 2-stop grad and stitched together 3 shots to get this final panorama.

Upper Falls Lunar Bow - Yosemite National Park, CA
IMG_9033
They said that the May 6th 2012 moon was to be a "super moon." Well maybe it "technically" was but it wasn't near as big as I expected from the pictures I've seen from the 2011 "super moon." Either way I manage to capture this amazing scene form the trail to upper yosemite fall. I hiked up that afternoon figuring I would shoot the late afternoon light then wait around for the moon. This turned out to be a bad decision. I had read in the forecast that it would be about fifty that night, well 50 at 6,000ft on an exposed ridge, wind blowing and getting sprayed by mist feels like ice! Not only did I nearly freeze to death but, the lunar bow didn't show up til around 1 AM and I didn't end up hiking out of there until after 2. Meaning that I sat up on the trail for well over 7 hours. Amazingly, however, I only saw one other person after about 7 PM that evening. And this photographer apparently got the "memo," he didn't show up until around midnight. But when all was said and done it was well worth the wait!

I found this awesome foreground and came away with one of my best shots of our whole trip. Funny part was that when I came back up the hill there were no less than a dozen photographers set up at the well known location. One of them said to me - "too bad there isn't any good light this morning, huh..." I just smiled and nodded.

Many Flowers in Many Glacier - Glacier National Park, MT
IMG_9909
During my eight days in Glacier the wild flowers kept getting more and more plentiful. And I repeatedly looked for a nice location to shoot some. Finally on my second to last day there, I came across this field on the road to the "many Glacier" area. I shot here two mornings in a row. The first morning was too windy to get anything good from the flowers, but luckily I had spent the actual sunrise shooting a panorama near the Many Glacier Hotel and the light was phenomenal. This one was taken right around sunrise on the calmer of the mornings when I could "stop" the flowers from swaying in the wind. I shot numerous photos on this morning featuring a few different colored flowers but I felt like the yellow ones contrasted best with soft hues of the morning. Later this day, around noon when the light was very harsh, I drove past this spot and saw no less than 15 photographers shooting in the same field. I couldn't help but smile and think how much better the scene was just a few hours before.

Many people say it looks nothing like posts sticking out of the water, but I guess since I was there I easily see it. What do you see???

This is the famous Delicate Arch. Just a short hike through Arches takes you to one the most amazing spots in the National Park System. And as such this landmark has been photographed to death. With that in mind, I had opted to head up here for some long exposure and moon light work after sunset. Then this happened! An explosion of wicked desert light and a sunburst you could see with the naked eye.... in short, a "picture" perfect sunset.

Land of Burning Skies - IMG#2220
Here lately I have been trying to organize some of my photography files and back-ups. As a result I keep coming across images I had totally forgot about. I took this shot on a fall evening almost 2 years ago. I knew on that night that I was witnessing one of the most spectacular sunsets I would ever see. Problems is that, as is the case with most explosive sunsets, the bright vivid colors in the sky made the scene impossible to expose properly with just one exposure. I took a series of bracketed exposures for blending. The end result is a blend of three images, one for the foreground, one for the brightest parts of the sky and one for the darker parts of the sky.

I have been striving lately to find some new places and or new looks on iconic landmarks, So while in Yosemite I finally attempted to get atop a particular cliff I had been staring at ever since going to Yosemite the very first time. It was very tough going and I didn't quite make it all the way where I had hoped before the light changed and I decide I had better stop and find some nice compositions.
